Information for parents and carers about measles outbreak and MMR vaccination

On 1 November a measles outbreak was declared in Cardiff. Seven children have been confirmed as having measles over the past six weeks, and it is possible that more cases could be identified over the coming weeks. Further information about measles can be found on the Public Health Wales website.

Complications due to measles infection is common, with 1 in 10 children requiring hospitalisation due to severe complications such as pneumonia and meningitis. Sadly for every 1000 cases of measles, there is at least one reported fatality due to the complications of the infection.

Measles is highly infectious, and the only way to prevent outbreaks is through MMR vaccination.  The vaccine is safe, quick and effective. Two doses of the vaccine are given, the first at 12 months of age and the second just after three years of age. However, it is never too late to catch up, so if a child has missed their MMR vaccine they can get it from their GP practice.

Children who have had one dose, but are not yet old enough to have received a second dose at just after 3 years old do not need to have this earlier than scheduled. Adults who have never had measles or the MMR vaccine and who are in close contact with children are urged to speak to their GP about vaccination. Here are some frequently asked questions about the MMR vaccine:

    • What does the vaccine contain and is it safe?

Vaccines contain a number of different ingredients that ensure they can work effectively. Some vaccines contain very small amounts of viruses or bacteria that have been weakened. There is no risk of a healthy person catching any disease from a vaccine. The ingredients are safe and are regulated by the Medicine and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

    • Is there gelatine in the MMR vaccine?

One MMR vaccine used in the UK (MMR VaxPro) contains tiny amounts of porcine (pork) gelatine. An alternative, gelatine free MMR vaccine (Priorix) is available, just ask your GP. More information about vaccines and porcine gelatine can be found here.

    • Can the MMR vaccine cause autism?

Many studies have shown that there is no evidence of a link between the MMR vaccine and autism.

    • Does the MMR vaccine cause side effects?

Like all vaccines, some mild side effects are possible, such as a sore arm or a slight fever, but these should last no more than a couple of days. Give children liquid paracetamol if needed. Note: do not give aspirin to children under 16 years unless prescribed by a doctor.

All parents and carers are encouraged to check if their child is up to date with their MMR vaccine, and if needed, make an appointment with their GP practice.

Attendance  - Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNS)

    Dear Parents/ Carers,

I am writing to inform you that, in line with our cluster of schools, we will be issuing Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNS) to parents/ carers whose children have unauthorised attendance. We may issue an FPN if:

    • your child had 5 days unauthorised absence within 1 school year.
    • your child is absent from school due to an unauthorised holiday
    • your child is more than 30 minutes late (arrives after 9:25am) more than 10 times

    Authorised/ unauthorised absence:

    • If your child is ill - this is classed as an authorised absence
    • Holidays are unauthorised.
    • Holidays of 5 days or less won’t incur an FPN IF the child’s attendance was 92% or above in the previous academic year.

    FAQs

What is the cost of a Fixed Penalty Notice?

An FPN is £60 if paid within 28 days

What happens if I do not pay a Fixed Penalty Notice?

Parents will be given up to 42 days from receipt to pay the Fixed Penalty Notice in full. If you fail to do so, the Local Authority will start proceedings in the Magistrates’ Court for the original offence of poor school attendance and/or punctuality.

Can a school issue their own Penalty Notices?

No. The Fixed Penalty Notice scheme is administered by the Local Authority.

Schools DO NOT receive any money from FPNs.

We are implementing this to help raise attendance of pupils to support attainment, progress and wellbeing. If you have any questions about this, do not hesitate to contact me.

    Yours sincerely

Mrs E Thomas - Head Teacher

  • ROAD SAFETY LETTER

    Tue 29 Mar 2022

    29th March 2022

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am writing to express my growing concerns regarding road safety, traffic congestion and car parking around the school gates.

Over recent weeks parents have been seen stopping on the yellow zig zag lines and in the middle of the road to drop their children off. It has also been observed that parents are parking in resident bays on System Street and Metal Street. I also have concerns about parents walking with their children in and out of parked cars, into the middle of the road. Sadly, when asked to move on or to be more careful some parents are swearing and gesturing in inappropriate ways. This is totally unacceptable around children of any age.

Several parents have complained abut the current situation we are seeing on a daily basis and I have also received complaints from the public regarding parents showing lack of awareness when dropping off and collecting their child.

I do appreciate the building site on Metal Street is causing some issues due to a lack of pavements and walkways but I wish to remind you that if you don’t act responsibly around the school gates you can put children’s lives at risk.

Please read the following reminders which have been agreed with the school’s Health and Safety committee of Governors with support from our Health and Safety Officer from the Local Authority.

I am hopeful that all our parents will work together to help us improve this situation. I will be monitoring all four gates currently in use and directly contacting parents who do not support our mission to keep our whole school community safe at all times.

If you have any questions or wish to raise any concerns please speak to myself or Ms.Williams.

Thank you for your continued support.

    Yours sincerely

Mrs E Thomas – Head teacher

Rules for parking around the school

    • Please park away from school and walk your child to the school gate.
    • Do not park in resident only parking bays – consider our neighbours.

    Speed limits in Adamsdown

    • All streets surrounding the school have a 20 mile per hour speed limit in place.

    Zig Zag lines

    • Cars cannot be parked on yellow zig zag lines at any time of day.
    • Do not pull onto zig zag lines to drop off your child – this is very dangerous.
